Satanism and the Eternal Recurrence

by Thomas LeRoy, Founder of The Sect of the Horned God

“What if some day, or night, a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: “This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more; and there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every joy and every thought and sigh and everything unutterably small or great in your life will have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence – even this spider and this moonlight between the trees, and even this moment and I myself. The eternal hourglass of existence is turned upside down again and again, and you with it, speck of dust!
“Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: “You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine.”
–from Nietzsche’s “The Gay Science

Nietzsche asked this question of his readers back in the 19th century, and now, in the 21st, how would you answer? Does it fill you with dread, or are you pleased with the idea? Is it a blessing or a curse? The demon’s assertion is the frightening possibility that everything that has happened, or will happen, has already occurred and will occur infinitely many more times, without the slightest alteration in detail, living this same life over and over until the end of time. And the image of the demon suggests that such a visitation would be seen as dangerous and unwelcome. Many would be highly unpleased with this notion. Their lives are filled with misery and pain, pain that is, more often than not, self-inflicted. The average Christian, for example, sees pain and suffering as an important part of their existence. Their beliefs hold that we are cursed from birth, and it is our job to live a humble life before the Lord so He may remove that curse, because the here and now is but a transitory phase. Life is simply a preface to an eternity of bliss. Because of this belief, the Christian would find the idea of the eternal recurrence to be horrific. But how would you, the modern Satanist, react to it?

There should be only one answer — with joy!

Satanists, if you are not already living your life to its fullest, then what are you waiting for? Existence itself should be viewed as something to be relished, all the happiness and heartache, pleasure and pain, should be held in the highest regard. You should have a love of fate — amor fati, the affirmation and acceptance of the whole of life. And eternal recurrence is a way to force attention on life exactly as it is. If one could say yes to eternal recurrence, then one could genuinely say yes to life as it is. One way of dealing with this idea, and to achieve a love of fate, according to Nietzsche, was that one must gain freedom from morality — a revaluation of all values:

“To endure the idea of the recurrence one needs: freedom from morality; new means against the fact of pain (pain conceived as a tool, as the father of pleasure; there is no cumulative consciousness of displeasure); the enjoyment of all kinds of uncertainty, experimentalism, as a counterweight to this extreme fatalism; abolition of the concept of necessity; abolition of the ‘will’; abolition of ‘knowledge-in-itself.'”

Nietzsche’s world-view is that of a “Dionysian world of eternally self-creating, eternally self-destroying . . .” The Dionysian attitude toward life is purely artistic, celebrating aesthetic value (even if it has no epistemic value) and rejoicing in the destruction of morality, especially Christian morality. It is an existence always in flux and the counter to the ascetic ideal of self-denial. In this reality the existential truths hold no sway over the individual. Change is the only constant, and with change comes pain. Strength is achieved through this suffering and true joy can come from over-coming (the will to power). Existence is short, and one must craft his or her’s own identity through self-realization and do so without relying on anything transcending that life, such as God or a soul. Your life should be lived without regret, remorse, or guilt, and open to the love of self, others (if found to be worthy of it) and the world in all its manifestations. This view goes beyond nihilism and is the essence of Nietzschean thought.

It is a way of restoring meaning to life — to your life!

The Zero Current (an exerpt from “Way of the Dionysian” by The Dark F00L)

These theories that Sigmund Freud presented: The Eros and Thanatos instincts, the ‘fort-da’ game and the repetition-compulsion, share a commonality with the ancient Dionysian practice of the frenzied participant as well as the Apollonian practice of the stoic/detached observer. Whether the experience is painful or pleasurable, anyone demonstrating these behaviors or practicing these techniques get in touch with a primal part of themselves; hearkening back to an earlier state. This is a state of ‘no mind.’ On a microcosmic scale within one’s individual consciousness, this state of zero can be either the combined sensation of intoxication and clarity, or the combined sensation of intoxication and chaos. Throughout time, creative people – artists, musicians, writers, etc. have shared this state of mind in common with athletes; some of whom dubbed this state of consciousness as ‘being in the zone.’ When an individual attains this ‘zone,’ actions become automatic and inspiration is achieved instantly. Most importantly, the individual’s sense of self or ego is dissolved into whatever endeavor they are pursuing (be it sports, music, art, etc.).

Another example of The Zero Current at work on a microcosmic scale can be found within adversarial strife, warfare, and power struggles. Historically, those in positions of power have been reluctant towards change; social or political. On one side, there’s a desire to maintain control and to keep things the way they are. On the other side, there’s a need for change (whatever the reason may be). When social or political tensions reach their climax, war or civil unrest usually occurs. Regardless of how long this unrest occurs, there will usually be one outcome: either the conservative powers-that-be will win and regain control, or those fighting for change will win and achieve whatever goal they’ve been seeking. Again, there is this push/pull dynamic where the conservative side wishes to keep things at an earlier state whereas the progressive side wishes to move things forward. The tension and conflict between these powers gives rise to warfare and tragedy, and it is during this time of strife that the effects of the ‘zero mind’ is often felt negatively within the soldiers fighting in these wars. Going back to Freud’s example of repetition-compulsion, which by today’s standards would be classified as PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), one suffering from these ailments find themselves regressing to a primal state due not only to the negative experience of combat, but also due to the intense mental conditioning and physical training they received.

On a macrocosmic scale, this Zero Current is a drive which pulls towards death and destruction; again hearkening back to an earlier state, while on a microcosmic level, evolving consciousness through tragedy. Biologically, the greatest example of The Zero Current is sex and the orgasm. On one level, an individual or individuals experiencing an orgasm regress to a primal state. The biological function of sex, regardless of whether one is heterosexual or homosexual, is meant for the procreation of life. Again, within sex and the orgasm, instincts revert while life propels. Secondly, nature has many different ways of restoring itself to a primal state. Scientists estimate that approximately 4 billion species have lived on this planet and that, due to disease, genetic obsolescence, or any number of environmental factors, (approximately) 3 billion 950 million have gone extinct; leaving about 50 million still alive to date. Some species strong enough to endure these numerous and harsh conditions end up adapting and evolving. There are a plethora of examples in which genetic adaptations have occurred. One such example (apart from Darwin’s finches) is frogs which have adapted to freezing temperatures by evolving a glycol-like substance. The Zero Current within nature is that adjustment which causes the death of certain species as well as what causes many species to progress, adapt, and evolve.

Regarding The Zero Current’s effects on the evolution of consciousness, mankind need look no further than himself and his own evolution. There are several biological and historical examples in which to examine and measure mankind’s growth throughout time. The Middle Ages in Europe, particularly during the outbreak of The Bubonic and Pneumonic Plagues, highlight The Zero Current’s effects upon nature and man both on a biological level as well as on a psychological level; macrocosmic and microcosmic.

At the time in which the Bubonic and Pneumonic Plagues (referred to as ‘The Black Plague’ or ‘The Black Death’) spread throughout medieval Europe, the Christian religion (along with its superstitions) dominated the worldview and the culture at that time. Many believed that God sent The Black Death as a punishment for man’s sins and transgressions, while others blamed the Jews for poisoning the drinking wells. Groups of people, known as The Flagellants, went from town to town whipping themselves publicly (simulating the death of Jesus Christ) in order to atone for their sins and praying that God would remove The Black Plague from the earth. Also, in their delusion, The Flagellants also claimed to have performed miracles; particularly through shedding their blood as a form of their own transubstantiation.

Most importantly, during the occurrence of The Black Death, a French physician and surgeon named Guy de Chauliac studied the plague and meticulously recorded his research; later to be published as the Chirurgia Magna. The Chirurgia Magna would become the most important medical manual for the next three centuries thereafter. In an era where religion, superstition and irrationality ruled the world-view of the population, the Chirurgia Magna broke new grounds not only by providing insight into a deadly disease that was rampant all throughout Europe, but also as an early scientific guide that was based solely off of observation and less on faith-based speculation. On a macrocosmic scale, The Zero Current, represented as The Black Death, wiped out half of Europe’s population; forcing both peasants and nobles alike to start their lives over again after its devastation. On a microcosmic scale, The Zero Current forced mankind to realize the faults in his perception; leading him away from faith-based theoretical approaches and directing him towards rational observation-based practices.

While the scientific approach proved to be a step in the right direction for mankind, The Zero Current has also shown that man’s greatest tool can also be his own undoing. Nothing has demonstrated this better than the era of The Cold War. When man developed nuclear weapons, he inadvertently created his own ‘reset button’ (if not, his own ‘game over’ button). In this case, man was not at the mercy of forces he could not control, but rather, at the mercy of his own creation. In the era of The Cold War, The Zero Current, on a macrocosmic level, threatened all life and all countries. On a microcosmic level, it forced countries like the United States and Russia into an arms race that benefited mankind in the form of space exploration. It also forced political figures to carefully evaluate foreign relationships and strategies that would prevent the occurrence of nuclear war. Again, we see this juxtaposition of the pull towards an earlier state (in the form of nuclear fallout), and a push towards advancement (demonstrated in the arms race and in building relations).

On a conscious and psychological level (microcosmic), The Zero Current has always been linked to tragedy. This was most understood by the ancient Greeks who created many rituals for Dionysus; the god of wine who, through his powers of intoxication, madness, and catharsis, could either relieve and save mankind or who could, by these very same powers, destroy them. Within the Apollonian and Dionysian dichotomy the Dionysian method of ritual, frenzy, and catharsis is a Left-Hand Path approach to tapping into The Zero Current whereas the Apollonian way of stoicism, detachment, and abstinence is a Right-Hand Path approach. The Middle Path ‘Dionysian’ does not necessarily limit themselves to either a Right or Left path, but rather, makes the entirety of both systems available to them for the purpose of tapping into The Zero Current.

An open letter to the keyboard warriors of the LHP:

“Challenger” and “Adversary” does not mean “one-who-criticizes-everything-possible-in-hopes-of-drawing-affimation-or-accolades-from-other-on-line-Satanists.”  You’re boring.  You’re unappealing.  You’re uncouth.  Far be it from me to posit absolutes, but I will say that being adversarial or agnostic in your life does not require bitching about the perceived “satanic value” of various television programs, movies, books, or fellow internet denizens.  It does not require you to dissect every post or video on multiple LHP forums in an attempt to bolster your Satanic internet credibility.  Your opinion was likely not solicited, and your post only illustrates your need to socially display your pseudo-superior understanding of all things LHP in the most transparent and desperate way possible.  These cyber-Satanists will often retort with ham-fisted excuses, my favorite being, “Why did you post this if you didn’t want it challenged?”  What are you doing in your own life away from the computer screen to validate your assertions of superiority?  Have you nothing better to do than surf the internet looking for “fresh prey?”  Why is your Axis Mundi an unrelenting focus on  YouTube or forums?  What a sad existence.  I can make this accusation because, at one time, I was one of these idiots.

So many find it necessary to belligerently give their alternate opinion or perception of a given topic in an attempt to present themselves as credibly Satanic.  Varying degrees of hostility are not a benchmark of Satanism.  Rather, I suggest that it’s the ability to politely carry on a conversation or contribute to a healthy debate that garners respect, if respect from others is what’s needed or desired.  Belligerent criticism and posturing mean nothing.  In any discussion, one must first have an intelligent and informed platform in which to present the issue or topic.  Alas, these basic concepts of common courtesy are all too often assumed unnecessary within the cyber world of Satanism.

Then there are the schemers and trolls; those who spend most of their free time with eyes glued to their computers and post vague ideas under the guise of philosophy.  They may also obfuscate overlong essays designed to repackage what has already been said by someone else in hopes of impressing the credulous or confusing the informed.  They wait for someone unfortunate person to reply, then proceed to elevate themselves above the questions posed by bullying or denigrating the questioner.  This is a common practice among many cyber-Satanists, some of whom are well known in many on-line communities.  They are tolerated for a time, then banned, and move on to another forum or Facebook group to start again.  These are parasites of the LHP, not Satanists.

My unsolicited advice to anyone still reading is simply this; honesty, courtesy and curiosity are still in style among those who know better.  Your attitude will always define your behavior.  Then again, this entire post is merely my opinion.  How you interpret it is up to you.  However, it’s my responsibility to present it with respect and candor, which I have genuinely tried to do here, and try to do with anything I do, say or write.  Thanks for reading.

The LHP Island

There are times I wish I could sink the islands that compromise the LHP universe. The logical thing to do would be to fix the holes in at least one of the battered boats that line the dock, and sail from shore to shore. I’d even be willing to help repair a few, but why bother. Though that would be one step toward ‘bigger change’, you still can’t lead a horse to the pond if they are happy slurping from their ‘near autonomous’ trough. What gets me thinking like this? What’s most frustrating on the road I have chosen? It’s the holes in my own boat that leave me on the island drinking from a common well. The trigger for some time now has been reading of Aghori lifestyle and philosophy, as well as others that are similar to them. While I am an atheist, that does not mean that the ‘spiritual’ side of their practice is without meaning, that it cannot be incorporated. It can, should and will be. There are times I am ashamed when considering my own limited view of the world, for allowing myself to even consider entertaining the thought of engaging in the seedy rituals acted out on the island playground. On the island, my voice is merely anothers broken record when personal introspection is only skin deep. If I can’t smash my own taboos, it would be arrogant to think that I smash those of others and be heard with a minimum of courtesy. It’s time to go sailing.

A Brief Description of Dionysianism

dio

By The Darkf00l

Dionysianism is a philosophy based on the dichotomy presented within the literary concept of the “Apollonian and Dionysian.” Mythically, the Greek gods Apollo and Dionysus were brothers. Apollo was the god of the sun and of reason, while Dionysus was the god of wine, intoxication, and madness. Unlike some myths where brothers of opposite qualities became enemies, Apollo and Dionysus never became rivals. It is this very relationship that lies at the core of the Apollonian and Dionysian dichotomy: the appearance of a contradictory nature which is actually a harmonious blend of opposite qualities.

Amongst the many philosophers who invoked the Apollonian and Dionysian dichotomy, it was Friedrich Nietzsche who contributed the most within his book “The Birth of Tragedy.” Within his book, Nietzsche attributes the dichotomy to the “Kunsttrieben” or “artistic impulses”. The Apollonian portion of the dichotomy represented characteristics such as the visual-plastic arts, the detached observer (or objective artist), rational/logical reason, and individuation. It’s opposite qualities, the Dionysian, represented the musical-intuitive arts, the frenzied participant (such as a dancer), the irrational/non-logical, and the dissolution of the self through the frenzied acts (in other words, wholeness).

Within my book, “Way of the Dionysian,” I take the Apollonian and Dionysian’s harmonious relationship a step further by correlating it with various concepts and with various spiritual paths and systems; particularly branding Dionysianism a Middle Path philosophy as it is comprised of both Right-Hand Path and Left-Hand path philosophies. My book will delve into the fluctuations between individuation and wholeness and how the transversal of both can benefit the individual and whichever group he or she happens to associate with. Other themes that correlate to the juxtaposition of opposite qualities as one include the life/death instinct (Freudian and Jungian), and, greatest of all, the “Zero Current” which is the universe’s own interplay of both order and chaos; causing evolution to occur on both a microcosmic and macrocosmic scale.
